How many gifts to put on your wedding registry — plus advice on price points!
4 Min Read
Ahh, it's a question as old as time (or at least as old as weddings): how many gifts should you put on your wedding registry? Good news! As the UK's favourite wedding gift list service, we have the answer to this, and a few other popular questions too (like, when to create a wedding registry and how to create a wedding registry)!
But, back to the task at hand: the size of your wedding gift list. When building your wedding registry, it’s important to make sure you’ve got plenty of gifts for your lovely guests to choose from. Too few and your guests won’t feel like they can buy you something that feels personal to both them and you. Too many and they may feel overwhelmed by choice. There's no exact rule or ettiquette to follow when it comes to deciding how many gifts to add to your list, but in our experience, there is a miniumum number you need, and then there's a magic number that creates the best guest shopping experience.
How many gifts to put on a wedding registry — a simple formula
Our nifty table will help you find your minimum and magic numbers. If you’re in between guest numbers, err on the side of caution and add more.
You can calculate the number of gifts you need by using these simple formulas:
- Minimum number of gifts — 60% of your wedding guest list (assuming most guests are in couples or families. If your guests are predominately solo, you'll want to increase this to reflect that).
- Magic number of gifts — double your guest list and add 3%. This gives everyone ample choice to select something that they love as much as you!
Guests | Minimum # of gifts | Recommended # of gifts |
---|---|---|
50 | 30 | 103 |
75 | 45 | 155 |
100 | 60 | 206 |
125 | 75 | 258 |
150 | 90 | 309 |
175 | 105 | 361 |
200 | 120 | 412 |
250 | 150 | 515 |
What about gift list price points?
So, you’ve got your magic number, great! Time to add gifts! But, what price points should you be hitting? The best lists have a wide variety of gifts to suit all budgets. It's important to make sure that none of your guests feel like they have to spend more than they are comfortable with.
To help you with this, we researched into the average guest spend and how much to give for a wedding gift in the UK. Typically, guests splash out £87 on a physical present, and £102 if they are giving money as a gift (pssst! If you really want cash, but are worried about saying that, then check out our guide on how to ask for cash as a wedding gift). Given that most pressies come in under 90 quid, at least 60 percent of the presents on your registry should be between £40-£100 to reflect this. Then make 25-30% of your list between £100-£250, and the final 10-15% can be £250+ for those high rollers.
Pro tip: activate group gifting for those pricer, big ticket items. That gives your guests the option of chipping in to purchase some extra special together.
